A24 is keeping weird and wonderful indie movies alive. The production company has become Hollywood’s tastemaker, making the films of up-and-coming auteurs culturally relevant: A24 movies dominated the Oscars this year, accounting for eight of the 20 acting nominees, with Everything Everywhere All at Once taking home the biggest prize (and a box-office haul of $140 million, the company’s largest yet). “We’re here because of the artists we work with—their willingness to take risks and tell incredible stories continue to drive us at A24,” co-founders Daniel Katz and David Fenkel wrote to TIME in an email. It has already debuted some of the buzziest—and most controversial—movies and shows of 2023: Beef, Beau Is Afraid, and The Idol. And with its Sundance hit Past Lives and Cannes Grand Prix winner Zone of Interest, it looks to be a favorite for Oscar gold again.
