As Twitter continues to take heat for the way it handles online abuse, the company said Thursday it is rolling out two new features aimed at giving all users more control over their notification settings.
One feature is a “quality filter” that Twitter said in its blog post will work by filtering out tweets based on factors like “account origin and behavior.” When the filter is turned on, Twitter will keep out “lower quality” content like duplicate or automated tweets.
The announcement did not specifically mention abuse as something the filter could pick up, but when Twitter launched the quality filter for verified users last year, abusive language was part of what the filter aimed to limit.
The other new feature available to all users will be an option to only receive notifications from only people you follow. That way, if a user is getting abuse from trolls or comments from people they don’t know, they can turn on the setting and stop seeing the strangers’ messages.
