Each nominee would receive forty percent of the vote
Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are neck-and-neck, according to a new opinion poll. Trump has gained ground while Clinton’s email problems continue to dog her trustworthiness rating among voters.
A New York Times/CBS Poll found Clinton and Trump would each receive 40% of the vote. The poll was conducted after the F.B.I. said Clinton’s handling of her emails was not illegal but “extremely careless.” During her tenure as Secretary of State, Clinton ran a private, unsecured email server that held classified information.

Nearly 70% of voters in the poll said Clinton is not honest or trustworthy, an increase of five percentage points from last month. Voters believe Trump would handle economic challenges better than Clinton, while voters split on how they would handle terrorism.
This poll is a snapshot and the larger trend of polling shows Clinton leading Trump nationally. But this is one of the first polls following the F.B.I. announcement that brought renewed focus to Clinton’s email woes.
