Rescuers Locate Debris After Family Boat Disappears Near Florida

U.S. Coast Guard officials are not sure if the debris belongs to the family

Rescuers located several items Wednesday off the coast of Florida that may be related to a missing sailboat carrying a father and his three teenage children.

A pair of tennis shoes, a tarp, a basketball, a propane tank, six life jackets and four water bottles that had been tied together were spotted in a debris field some 33 miles off the coast of southern Florida, near the group’s last-known position, Fox News reports. U.S. Coast Guard officials said it’s unclear if the items belonged to the group.

“We’re searching in a particular spot,” Capt. Gregory Case said. “We kind of have tracked their voyage and where they should be, and we’ve back drifted that.”

Ace Kimberly was sailing from Sarasota to Fort Myers, Fla., on Sunday afternoon with his daughter Rebecca, 17, and sons Donny, 15, and Roger, 13. Kimberly’s brother reported him missing to the Coast Guard on Tuesday after growing concerned that his brother had not reached his final destination.
