The floods and landslides were prompted by the country's worst rains since 2010
The death toll from last week’s devastating floods in Sri Lanka was revealed to have risen to triple digits Tuesday, as receding waters laid bare the extent of the disaster’s damage.
At least 101 people have been confirmed dead over the past week, the country’s Disaster Management Centre (DMC) was cited as reporting by Agence France-Presse.
“Over 530 houses have been completely destroyed and another 4,000 partly damaged,” DMC spokesman Pradeep Kodippili told AFP. More than 100 others are still missing in the worst-hit district of Kegalle, about 60 miles from the Sri Lankan capital Colombo, following landslides prompted by what officials said were the South Asian nation’s worst rains in more than five years.
