The Best Political Photographs of the Week

TIME recaps political photography in the week of Jan. 29- Feb. 5

Children can be unpredictable. So when Marco Rubio invited his seven-year-old son, Dominick, on stage during a campaign town hall event in Salem, N.H., the Republican presidential contender had to know that photographers would be pointing their cameras at him. Getty Images’ Chip Somodevilla was one of them, capturing Dominick in the middle of a large yawn as his father talked just a few feet away. Somodevilla’s image is one of the Political Photographs of the Week as selected by TIME’s photo editors.

This past week, as voting finally began in the presidential race after an 18-month-long campaign, James Nachtwey photographed Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton, Danny Wilcox Frazier was in Des Moines when insurgent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders gave his “victory” speech and Nate Gowdy documented both Democrats as they dueled one last time before New Hampshire’s upcoming primaries – all three photographers were on assignment for TIME.

On the Republican side, Natalie Keyssar, also on assignment for TIME, followed Texas Sen. Ted Cruz as he posed for selfies ahead of his Iowa win. As for Donald Trump, Damon Winter of the New York Times captured the crowds’ fervor as the billionaire moved on from Iowa to New Hampshire, where he continues to lead the polls.

TIME’s selection of the Best Political Photographs of the Week is published every Thursday.
