Canadian artist Wendy Tsao is transforming Bratz dolls into some of history’s most inspiring women. By re-painting the dolls to strip them of their heavy makeup and dressing them in new outfits, she is creating the likenesses of remarkable females.

Her Mighty Dolls are based off of empowering role models such as Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, author J.K. Rowling and anthropologist Jane Goodall. Tsao was inspired to begin her project when she read a children’s book about Goodall, according to Buzzfeed. She was also influenced by Sonia Singh‘s Tree Change Dolls, Bratz given dramatic make-unders to make them look like real girls.

“The dolls we find in toy stores today are often licensed Disney characters or the heroines of Hollywood blockbuster movies that capitalize on the pull of fantasy, fictional characters to young consumers. But there are real-life people who are heroes too, with inspiring stories of courage, intelligence, strength and uniqueness,” Tsao wrote of her work on Bored Panda.
