You Can Now Watch Africa’s Great Migration of Wildebeest Live Online

In a world first, people around the globe will be able to witness Africa’s great wildebeest migration in real time as this natural wonder is broadcast live online.

Every year, more than 1 million wildebeest, about 500,000 gazelle and 200,000 zebras trek 1,000 miles from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Maasai Mara in Kenya to find fresh grazing land, reports the Guardian.

Until Oct. 5, wildlife fans will be able to follow the action using mobile app Periscope and YouTube’s Live Streaming Service. Just register with HerdTracker to receive notifications of when the two daily 20-minute broadcasts will be streamed. Users will also hear expert commentary as the wildebeest head north across the grasslands and cross the perilous Mara River where hundreds of hungry crocodiles await.

Once the animals reach the Maasai Mara they’ll run a gauntlet through one of the largest concentrations of lions in the world. Other predators such as cheetahs, hyenas and leopards will also be waiting for the wildebeest and other herbivores including gazelle, zebra, impala and eland.

By late October, the herd — ever in a state of flux — heads south to the Serengeti to begin the cycle once more.
