If you fight with monsters for too long, you become a monster. Such is the dilemma faced by Sandra Bullock in Our Brand Is Crisis, which finds the Oscar-winning actress playing Jane Bodine, a formerly world-class campaign strategist who gets a shot at redemption when she’s called on to help sway a presidential race in South America.

“About two and a half years ago I put out feelers saying, ‘I’m not reading anything I’m excited about,’” Bullock told EW of the film, which was produced by George Clooney and Grant Heslov. “ ‘Are there any male roles out there that [the filmmakers] don’t mind switching to female?’” Our Brand Is Crisis fit the bill: The part was originally set for Clooney, but switched for Bullock when she showed interest in Peter Straughan’s script.

Also starring Billy Bob Thornton, Anthony Mackie, Scott McNairy, Zoe Kazan, Ann Dowd, and Joaquim de Almeida, and directed by David Gordon Green, Our Brand Is Crisis arrives in theaters on Oct. 30 and will premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Featuring music accompaniment from Credence Clearwater Revival (“Fortunate Son”) and Ten Years After (“I’d Love to Change the World”), the film’s pretty excellent first trailer is above.
