No. 11 Dayton brought down Ohio State 60-59 in the final seconds of the game on the opening day of the NCAA Tournament

The giant-slaying has begun. Eleventh-seeded University of Dayton upset sixth-seeded Ohio State University in the final seconds of the first March Madness Round of 64 game on Thursday.

Dayton stunned Ohio State, beating them 60-59. Vee Sanford scored a layup with 8.8 second left to put Dayton ahead. Ohio State star Aaron Craft launched a desperation 10-footer as the buzzer sounded to try to pull off a victory, but the ball hit the backboard before rolling off the rim. Craft lay on his back as the Dayton Flyers celebrated around him.

Thursday’s loss was only the third time Ohio State has been eliminated in its first game in 26 trips to the Big Dance. Ohio State began the season 15-0, but only won 10 of its last 20 games. Dayton, on the other hand, had a 1-5 slump before going on a roll: they’re 11-2 in their last 13 games.

Dayton will play the winner of Thursday’s Syracuse-Western Michigan matchup on Saturday.
