Nearly 150 firefighters struggled to contain the inferno

A massive fire swept through a construction site in San Francisco’s Mission Bay neighborhood Tuesday evening.

CNN reports that nearly 150 fighters struggled to contain the blaze as it engulfed a $227 million dollar residential development and threatened to spread to nearby buildings. Fire officials said they had evacuated several hundred residents from the area.

Mayor Ed Lee thanked the fire department for keeping the blaze within the construction site, according to the Associated Press. “The very real potential of severe damage to other homes, businesses, and structures in the neighborhood was avoided,” he said.

Officials have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
